Narratives, Heritage, Horror and Humour
Furst Versicle. Hell / 2015 - 2017
Language is not just the basis for a culture but reflects and symbolises how we view the world.
50 words for snow, 100 words for shite.
Where we give importance to our shared experiences as part of collective culture can be scried from the words we use and how we use them.
In Scots, a language which has suffered systematic oppression, we use bathos to find light in darkness. It is a tool which can symbiotically show our vulnerability in a subjugated society and our endurance surviving generations of the suffocation of our culture.
Semiotic language; visual, literal and the rest, is a code to be cracked. Narrative repeats, informs and reflects all at once. The past, the present and the future is written in these stories.
Let's go find them.
Art is a tool. You can own a tool but it is never the finished product. Art is how you make the change in people.”
Working within a cross-medium context allows movement within all aspects of the subject. It widens the audience and it engages different people. Like speaking in different languages, by using film, photography, performance, installation and sound - the message is read loud and clear.
Film, in particular, is multimedia in nature. It is sound, visual, narrative - and for the most part - collaborative. By including the audience in the production of the work, by breaking these walls between audience and collaborator - you bring ownership. And with ownership comes engagement. And with engagement comes communication. And that is what art is, a tool for communication.
Art is a tool. You can own a tool, but it is never the finished product. Tools make changes. Tools turns a tree into a chair, Art makes the change, but it's in the mind. Art is how you make the change in people.
